New York City FC was met with a cruel blow Thursday, as the club announced important midfielder Yangel Herrera will miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury.
The Venezuelan picked up the problem in the 3-1 loss to Houston Dynamo on May 25.
He underwent an arthroscopic ankle procedure and is expected to recover fully.
New York is currently second in the Eastern Conference standings. Should it reach the playoffs, it is unclear whether Herrera would stand any chance of returning in time to feature in the postseason.
The 20-year-old, who is on loan from NYFC's parent club Manchester City, has one goal and five assists in 33 appearances for the Bronx side.
