The Buffalo Bills announced the release of defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Tuesday.

Gardner-Johnson served a one-game suspension without pay for spitting at a group of Las Vegas Raiders players in Week 6. The Bills had a bye in Week 7, and he missed the team's 36-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

Gardner-Johnson's inconsistent play was a big factor in the Bills' decision to move on, a source told NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe. Damar Hamlin, who started in place of Gardner-Johnson against Baltimore, is expected to take over the starting safety role alongside Cole Bishop, Wolfe added.

The Bills plan to keep defensive back Te'Cory Couch on the active roster after elevating him Oct. 31 while Gardner-Johnson was suspended.

Gardner-Johnson was in his eighth NFL campaign and first season with Buffalo. The 28-year-old started six games and recorded 26 tackles, two pass breakups, and one interception.

The Florida product has dressed for six teams since the New Orleans Saints drafted him in 2019. He's also suited up for the Chicago Bears, Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles, and Detroit Lions.
