New York Mets manager Buck Showalter announced Wednesday that right-hander Tylor Megill will start Opening Day on Thursday against the Washington Nationals.

Showalter added the team will decide Thursday if Max Scherzer will get the start Friday, according to Tim Britton of The Athletic.

The Mets were projected to begin the 2022 campaign with arguably the best starting rotation in baseball. But two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom has been shut down for a month due to a shoulder injury, while Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young winner, is dealing with a minor hamstring issue.

Megill, 26, authored a 4.52 ERA with 99 strikeouts over 89 2/3 innings (18 starts) during his rookie season last year.
