The New York Yankees are expected to make a qualifying offer to pending free-agent closer David Bednar, sources told Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
The Yankees are unlikely to make the same offer to second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., Heyman adds.
Bednar enters free agency after a terrific 2026 campaign that included a 7-3 record with a 2.47 ERA, 2.61 FIP, and 35 saves in 69 1/3 innings.
The 32-year-old right-hander authored a 2.39 ERA, 10.6 K/9, and 45 saves in 86 appearances for the Yankees after being traded from the Pittsburgh Pirates in July 2025.
Meanwhile, Chisholm struggled in the final year of his contract with the Yankees, posting his lowest wRC+ (98) in five years and playing below-average defense at second base.
Chisholm, who has accrued the third-most fWAR among second basemen since 2024, will be one of the top position players available in free agency even after his down year.
The 28-year-old said he hopes to return to the Bronx despite being booed by Yankee fans on several occasions throughout the campaign.
MLB's qualifying offer is reportedly increasing to $23.15 million this offseason, which is a 5.1% rise from last winter's offer.
