Rudy Gay sat out for the San Antonio Spurs on Monday against the Boston Celtics, and head coach Gregg Popovich said he could miss extended time due to a sprained left wrist, via ESPN.com's Michael C. Wright.

Gay hurt the wrist during Saturday's win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

The 32-year-old was productive in December, averaging 14.4 points and 5.7 rebounds on 54 percent shooting while mostly playing power forward. The Spurs also had a strong month, winning nine of their last 12 going into Monday.

Jakob Poeltl is expected to receive increased playing time in Gay's absence.
