The Miami Marlins traded shortstop Miguel Rojas to the Los Angeles Dodgers for infielder Jacob Amaya, both clubs announced Wednesday.
Rojas, eligible to become a free agent after the 2023 campaign, returns to the team he started his major-league career with in 2014 following an eight-year run with the Marlins.
The deal went through despite a minor issue for Rojas after he recently underwent wrist surgery, sources told Craig Mish of the Miami Herald. He'll reportedly need a procedure for the ailment.
The 33-year-old slashed .236/.283/.323 with six homers and 36 RBIs over 140 games with Miami in 2022. However, he posted a career-high 14.3 defensive rating last season, according to FanGraphs.
Rojas' addition gives the Dodgers some infield depth after Trea Turner left in free agency. Gavin Lux is another option to be the starting shortstop come Opening Day.
Been told that Miguel Rojas will play 3B, SS and 2B for #Dodgers and won't necessarily come in as starting SS once acquisition for #Marlins INF is completed. But Rojas was a Gold Glove finalist at SS and gives LA a solid option there if they want to keep Gavin Lux at 2B

Meanwhile, Amaya is the No. 15-ranked prospect in the Dodgers system, according to MLB Pipeline. The 24-year-old went deep 17 times with 71 RBIs across a combined 113 games between Double-A and Triple-A last season.
